21st of March: Please refer to the
Happy March 1st! I am going to give Weebly another try and hope this message saves. The children are beginning to put together their businesses this week. If they need supplies please help them with a trip to the store so that they can be prepared for Market Day next week. They are to pay you back any money that is borrowed after they have their sale and hopefully make a profit.
Tuesday, 13th of January: Thank-you for the donations of blankets, clothing, and money that was brought to school today. In addition to charity being an important part of the Islamic faith, it is also very important in the PYP philosophy to be globally aware and take action when we see others in need. So again, I thank-you for your generosity. Ms. Holly
Monday, 12th of January: The children have almost all selected to do some extra math homework as a review of multiplication and division. They are coming home with a packet today. This will help them prepare for a unit test we have this week! Each child will choose a topic about weather to begin researching about on the computer and in books. Please talk with your child about the topic that interests them. Thank-you, Ms. Holly
Sunday, 11th of January: Hello and welcome back to school! The weekly math facts this week are a review of four computation skills. The children seem a little slower than usual in solving them and so extra nightly practice at home is a great idea. Also, many informed me they did not read over the long three week break. Please have them spend at least 10-15 minutes each night reading an English book. If we are to see growth and being prepared for 4th grade in the next five months, they must both practice and come to school! My hope is the children will do their part and show up ready to learn each day and I promise I will do my very best assure they are ready for the next grade. Each child also has a card with a login code to be able to go online and practice Everyday Math Skills w
Tuesday, 16th of December: Tests will be given tomorrow for both spelling and math facts. Please help your child practice the multiplication facts. Many d not have these facts easily even for 2, 5, 10's.
Tuesday, 9th of December: Many apologies. I have been posting this week on the Weebly and for some reason it is not saving! If this this is unsuccessful I will send a detailed email instead.
First, the homework paper is longer this week because we had two weeks from before the holiday plus this week. It is due on Thursday. Secondly, we have begun doing Secondly, the children are studying multiplication and practicing basic facts would be helpful at home.
Finally, our new unit of inquiry is about weather. Right now thee is confusion between what are seasons and what is weather. Utube is helpful with short videos under the search, "Reasons for Season." Sunday, 30th of November: There is a homework sheet for these two days and the following week. Many wonderful photos of your children at the ENS National Day celebration will be posted today for you to see. Enjoy your holiday and I look forward to seeing all the children on our return to school. Ms. Holly
Monday, 24th of November: Yesterday I posted on Weebly information about math. I have sent home additional math work for the children to do over the long National Day break. Some of the children have begun working on this packet already.
Also, on the post I reminded families that on Wednesday the children are to dress in black. I will be sending a more detailed email later today to discuss what we are doing in 3.2. Sunday, 16th of November: I apologize for the failure to record homework the past week. Often times it seems not necessary given that the homework seldom is different from what is already on the 3rd grade website. That being said, please review the homework sheet with your children this evening to plan for the week ahead. Also, the class has taken an interest in learning to play chess. Additional time can be spent on computers at home to teach this wonderful thinking game. Automaticity with math facts, adding numbers up to 20 without use of fingers to count, is expected in 3rd grade. Thank-you, Ms. Holly
Wednesday, 5th of November: Today was a very successful field trip! The children were all very skilled at finding many versions of advertisements and we had fun in the process. Please see the photos in the gallery and your sons and daughters hard at work.
Remember we have or spelling and math facts tests tomorrow. Tuesday, 4th of November: We are beginning a new unit on linear measurement in math. It would be helpful to support your child's understanding by reviewing pages in the Math Student Reference Book that was sent home in the beginning of the year. The chapter on measurement begins on pages 152. Also, in our unit of inquiry there as been much cutting of advertisements. Many children still do not have scissors at school. Please send a pair of those for your child if they do not have a pair. Sunday, 2nd of Novemeber: Please note as stated in the email sent yesterday
Monday, 27 of October
Please take a peek at our healthy eating today! A LOT of red!
Tuesday, 21st of October: I apologize for the lack of homework updates recently. The reality is that besides the homework that is given on Sunday and posted on the Weebly, there is nothing new to share. I spoke of homework in my weekly email to you all and the continued importance of reading nightly.
However, there have been questions about Student Council. The Council is an opportunity for children to take a leadership role in the school. It is a model government where children come together to make the school a better place. Children interested should have enthusiasm for ENS and creativity in ways to make the school better. Also, they should demonstrate good behavior when in a group of other students. It is ot a play time. I hope that is helpful. Tuesday: Many students have been sent home with "fact family triangles" to practice easy addition and subtraction problems at home each night. Please ask your child if he or she has a bag of these math triangles in their backpacks and let them show you how we practice. Also, if possible it would be wonderful if you could help your child go online and join Khan Academy. It is free and has math activities that can be done at home and school. However, first the students must register at home. www.Khanacademy.org (class code is XWRDV3)
Sunday, October 12th: Welcome back to a full week of school. I hope all families enjoyed a special holiday time together! We are ending our unit of inquiry with assessments and skits this week. Please ask your child to talk with you about his or her part in the play on Wednesday. Also, we are starting a new unit in math. Most of the children do not have automaticity with their addition and subtraction facts. Tomorrow many students will be bringing home fact family triangles for them to practice each night. I cannot stress enough the importance of regular attendance. It is very simple, if your son or daughter are absent, they are missing instruction that often cannot be made up. Thank-you, Ms. Holly

Wednesday: Tomorrow the children will have spelling and math facts tests and should study for those. It is very important for each child to read every night for 15-20 minutes. Today is the day that home reads are exchanged and therefore the class can return the books from school to get new ones for the next week. Thank-you, Ms. Holly
Tuesday: Please talk with your children about the government of the UAE. I am learning about it, but you parents are the experts! Specifically, we want the children to understand that there are many ministries (education, judicial, public works, culture & youth, finance, foreign affairs, energy, and environment & water). These ministries will be our focus tomorrow. They children may find SMALL pictures of anything that is related to these to add to their books to bring to school tomorrow. It is not required, they can also draw pictures. Also, there are several children who have been given adapted spelling words. They know who they are. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask me questions. Thank-you, Ms. Holly
Monday: Today the children began making books that will represent the seven parts of the UAE government. It is not required, but if they would like to download photos at home to cut and place into their books they may do extra research on home computers. Small pictures can be of the UAE flag, the president, the prime minister or of the seven members of the Federal Supreme Council. Again, this would be an extra thing your child may wan to search for and print at home. Thank-you for the families who are able to get their children to school to start on time at 7:30 each morning. Ms. Holly
Sunday: Today the children will be given a list that has the first seven spelling words underlined. I am giving this shorter list to those students who are struggling with weekly tests. It is hoped that if this group of students have an adapted list they will have greater success on the Thursday test. Also, we are beginning to prepare for writing narratives. When your son or daughter reads each night, please ask them who the characters are, where the setting is, and to tell you the story from the beginning to the end in their own words. They may do this in English or Arabic if that is easier. Thank-you, Ms. Holly
Week 3 W/C 14th September 2014
Wednesday, 17 of September. The children should study for their spelling test tomorrow. Also, many are having challenges with understanding place value. It would be helpful to write a big number up to the thousands and ask them what each numeral represents. For example: 3,459 the 3 represents 3 hundreds or 3000, 4 represents four hundreds or 400, 5 5 tens or represents 50 and 3 is three ones. I am reviewing this with a group at school as well. Thank-you, Ms. Holly
Monday, 15th of September. Please help your children practice the patterns of math. We are focusing on counting by 2s, 5s, 10s. They can do this by clapping each number. It is to be able to start at a number besides 0 when skip counting. For example, 44, 46, 48, 50... or 230, 240, 250....
Sunday, 14th of September. Please look over the new spelling words with your children. It is important to read each evening and talk about the story. Discuss setting, characters, main idea, and the important events.
