Dear parents
Assalamu Alaikum
I hope you are all well and have had a good week.
This week we managed to complete all the work we set out to complete at the start of the week. The basic math of the students is improving each work. This will be very important as we move forward into new learning areas. The students are beginning to show a better understanding of grammar and punctuation usage in English language and arts. The students have thoroughly enjoyed this unit of inquiry called Who We Are. We have managed to learn about rights and responsibilities in society, the UAE government as well as look closely at the link between the three. Thank you to those parents who assisted their child in bringing in some pictures for their flipbooks which we made in class.
Thank you all for your co-operation and support.

Dear Parents
Assalamu Alaikum
I hope you are all well.
This week in mathematics we learned how to draw a pictograph, work with money and patterns in number sequences. In English Language and arts we learned about plurals, character descriptions and sentence construction. In UOI we took a closer look at the government of the UAE and started making our very own flipbook.
There is still a poor response to homework being completed and handed back to me. Well done to those students who did complete their homework and handed it in today. Please could you encourage your child to complete their homework each day and to return it on Thursday. This is of great benefit to your child in consolidating what is being learned in the classroom. Thank you for your co-operation.
We are continuing our UOI with a stronger focus on Government. If you or a member of your family works for any part of the government please take the time to share with your child what part it is, what they are responsible for and why it is important. Being able to connect the concept of government to the real world will help your child develop their understanding.
Reminders
Pictures for our flipbook
Please could you assist your child in finding some small pictures that they can use to stick in their flipbooks. A small picture for each category would be great to add some colour and to make your child’s flipbook a little more beautiful. Please note that the picture must be small so that it can fit in the flipbook. No bigger than 5 centimetres squared. The categories we are learning about in our flipbook are The President of the UAE, The Prime Minister of the UAE, The Federal Supreme Council, The cabinet, The Ministries, The Federal National Council and the people of the UAE. Your pictures can include pictures of members of the government, map of the UAE, pictures of government buildings, pictures of the ministry, pictures of the people of the UAE celebrating National day. Feel free to find and bring in any pictures you find. The pictures must come in on Sunday 28 September.

Well done to all the parents who have worked hard at dropping off and collecting their children on time from school. Let us try to keep to the times and avoid tardiness as well as late end of day pick-ups. Please be reminded that you will be given a late slip if you arrive to school late and you will be asked to sign your child out if they are collected late at the end of the day. The late register needs to be signed by a driver or parent so please be prepared to enter the school to collect your child from the line as well as sign the late register.

No footballs allowed at school
Students are not allowed to bring their own footballs to school. We will provide footballs for students to play with at play time.

Assalamu Alaikum.
I hope you are all well and have had a restful weekend.
This week in mathematics we will be working with coins, interpreting and drawing a pictograph, adding and subtracting money and conversion of dollars into cents and vice versa. It is important to mention that in this area we work with American money and coins and it is highly important that students become familiar with the names of the coins as well as the denominations used. This can be a confusing area for students as many are familiar to only working with and understanding Dirhams and fils. It would be of a great help if you continue to remind your child and have them learn at home too that a penny is 1 cent, a nickel 5 cents, a dime 10 cents and a quarter 25 cents.
In English language and arts we will be working with plurals, sentence construction and narrative writing character descriptions. We will continue our daily reading activities and look to complete our classroom book review.
In Unit of Inquiry we will continue learning about government, rights and responsibilities.
Homework
All students have been given the homework for the week along with the spelling words practice sheet.

Assal1amu Alaikum
I hope you are all well.
Since our midweek review we have gone on to do more work with our calculators in math to solve word problems as well as go further into using a number grid to find differences. In English Language and Arts we continued with sentence construction and also began learning about and writing our first book review. In UOI we began to learn about Government and their functions in society. We watched a video which encouraged a lot of discussion. The students enjoyed learning about their government and showed a good level of interest. We also made some posters this week to express what we have learnt this week.
Some Reminders
Please assist your child with their homework and ensure they complete what is needed for each day on the specific day. There are still a large number of students not completing or handing in their homework. Please ensure your child has completed their homework by the end of every week.
I have attached an updated calendar for the school year for your convenience. Please take a careful look as there are some changes that have been made.
I would like to thank all of you for your co-operation and hard work in ensuring your child has a successful and happy year.
Have a great weekend.

Assalamu Alaikum
I hope you are all well and having a good week.
This week we have covered bar graphs. collection boxes and certainty in mathematics. We have also been practicing our basic facts of counting in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s using our white boards. We have taken a closer look at rights and responsibilities and were able to complete a sorting out activity to differentiate between the two. Our daily reading to ourselves as well as reading to others has been going very well too. In English Language and Arts we have continued to focus on basic sentence construction.
I would like to take this opportunity to provide some tips on how you can help your child at home with regard to their academics.
Work with your child daily on their reading. Have them read to you and then go on to ask them questions about what they have read to ensure they have developed an understanding to the text.
Work on the weekly spelling words on a daily basis such as from the homework sheet. You can have your child read a sentence out loud to you using the word or go further and have them write down 3 sentences a day for you. Ensure your child prepares adequately for the weekly test and even give them a test the night before so as to ensure they are well prepared.
Work with your child on basic math. It is important they develop a fluent understanding of simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. There are various ways you can achieve this. You can have your child complete sums you have written down for them, have them dictate out loud their timetables or other simple math questions such as asking them “3+1, 4+6” and so on. You should also have your child count to you and see how far they can count to each day. Another great way is to have them play some online games such as these ones below:
http://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_PenguinJumpMultiplication.html
http://www.mathplayground.com/number_bonds_10.html
http://www.mathplayground.com/number_bonds_20.html
http://www.mathplayground.com/index_addition_subtraction.html
Students find these games highly entertaining and they are an effective way in getting children to work quickly with basic facts.
We will have our weekly assembly every Wednesday morning at 7:30 am where we will also hand out our learner profile awards for the week.
I hope you find some of these suggestions useful.
A reminder to please ensure your child is dropped off at school on time which is before 7:20am and collected on time each day. If you arrive to school late you will be given a coloured slip to give to your classroom teacher. This slip means you have been tardy. Also if you are collected late which is after 3pm and after 12:45pm on a Tuesday you will be expected to sign the late book.
Please remember to assist your child in preparing for her basic facts and spelling test on Thursday.

This week in mathematics we will be covering the areas of displaying data in a bar graph, working with name collection boxes, working with certainty of events (sure it will happen, not sure it will happen and might happen) and working with finding differences using a number grid. We will also focus on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s on a daily basis in preparation for the basic math test on Thursday. I encourage you to work with your child in counting in these patterns.
In English language and arts we will continue to work with grammar in preparation for writing a text. The areas we will focus on are adjectives, nouns, verbs, full stops and capital letters. We will begin to construct our own short sentences with the use of some words by the end of the week. We will also aim to learn on how to write a book review at the end of this week. All students will receive a wordbook this week. This will be a reference book which students can keep. Every time they do not know how to spell a word, the student will ask me to assist them, after which they will add this word to their wordbook for reference later on. I find this as a very effective tool in building each child’s vocabulary and in improving their spelling.
In Unit of Inquiry we will deepen our understanding of rights and responsibilities through discussion, viewing videos and listening to songs as well as reading articles and stories to encourage discussion. We will also focus on the formation and functions of government in a country and the responsibilities they have towards its people.
Please practice the weekly spelling words on a daily basis with your child as this will assist them greatly in preparing adequately for the spelling test at the end of the week.
General
You will find the additional reading on the weebly page on a daily basis.
Just a reminder that girls will have swimming on a Tuesday and boys on a Wednesday so please ensure your child is prepared.
I would like to remind you that under school policy all students who bring a snack or lunch to school must ensure that it is a healthy one. Students cannot bring chocolate or sweets or anything that may be unhealthy. You are free to send your child to school with fruit and anything else that is healthy.
Also under school policy is that if it is your child’s birthday you are not allowed to bring in a cake or cupcakes, sweets or anything unhealthy for the class. You are more than welcome to bring a fruit basket in first thing in the morning that the students can share during snack time if you do wish to send something to school.
Let’s continue to focus on ensuring that your child arrives to school on time as well as collected on time throughout the week. Thank you for your co-operation.

End of Week Review
11 September 2014
Assalamu Alaikum
I hope you are all well and looking forward to a wonderful weekend.
This week we started our daily reading programme. We focused on reading one book this week and ended off by discussing the book with each other today. We will complete this book by writing a book review next week. We read individually to ourselves and also began reading in groups. I would like to encourage you to read as much as you can with your child at home as this will assist them greatly in improving their reading. I will post a link to a story or article which you can read with your child at home on the Weebly page on a daily basis. I encourage you to ask your child questions after they have read the story or article so as to ensure that they have understood what they have read. Children must be able to read as well as understand the content of what they have read.
This week we covered number sequences, number grids, learning how to use a reference book and working with a calculator in math. A lot of the work covered this week has been a revision of previous work with more content added as well as level of difficulty.
In Unit of Inquiry (UOI) we completed our pre assessment on the first Unit called Who We Are. A pre assessment is an activity that students complete before being given any information or explanation of the Central Idea. We then went on to discuss Rights and Responsibilities and what they are. We watched videos and listened to some songs related to Rights and Responsibilities in order to gain a better understanding. Students enjoyed this a lot and were able to better understand these two learning areas. Students were assessed on their understanding with activities that they completed after learning about rights and responsibilities.
We continued to work on sentence construction throughout the week and focused on key areas such as nouns and adjectives as we build up in preparing the students for a writing piece. Students showed a good understanding in the activities completed in lessons.
Thank you to those parents who have been dropping off and collecting their children on time from school each day. Your children are maximising their learning time as well as being a lot happier in going home quickly after a long day at school. Thank you for your cooperation. Keep it up!
I would like to encourage those parents who have not bought their children stationary yet to do so as soon as possible.
Please encourage your child and work with them in completing their homework each week.
Well done to all the students for a wonderful week!
Enjoy your weekend!

Assalamu Alaikum
I hope you are all well.
This week we started our Daily 5 reading routine which involves reading to yourself and reading to others for the first 30 minutes of each day. I have been able to go around and listen to each group read. The students have really taken to this routine and their reading will certainly improve with time. In mathematics we started our first Everyday Math Unit. The areas we have covered so far are number sequences, Working with a number grid and also learning how to make the best use of our Student Reference books. The last area being of great importance as it offers students a great way to search for any areas they may need practice with as well as assist greatly in preparing for assessments.
In English Language and Arts we have focused on the construction of sentences. The areas we have practiced are the use of a full stop and capital letters. We were able to complete some small sentence writing activities and used the white board to help each other. This is all in preparation for the writing activity we will be completing in a few weeks time. I would like to remind you to be punctual in having your children at school on time in the mornings so that they do not miss out on important instruction. I would also like to remind you that there are still a number of students who are not being picked up after school on time and I hope that we can work together in rectifying this. The first spelling test will be on Thursday and I encourage you to assist your child in preparing for this. If you have any questions or queries do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] . I hope you all have a wonderful day.

Welcome to Grade 3!
I am Mr Muhammed and I will be your child’s Homeroom teacher for the year. I will be teaching your children Mathematics, English Language Arts and Unit of Inquiry which includes science and social studies. It has been a pleasure working with your child this week and getting to know them. We have a wonderful class and I feel we will have a wonderful and successful year. I look forward to working with your child and bringing out the best in their abilities and character. This week we worked on metal math, basic math facts, writing about our holidays, making our word wall, talking about and writing our essential agreements, general Literacy activities, reading to each other and some fun classroom activities. It has been a pleasure to meet some of the parents this week and I look forward to meeting more as the quarter progresses. I will be keeping you updated with information, reminders and an overview of the work we are covering in the classroom on a weekly basis. I feel communication in all these areas plays an important role in having a successful year. Please do not hesitate to contact me via email [email protected] if you have any queries or concerns. I look forward to hearing from you.
